Product Description
Bob Terzuola, aka "Bob T.," is a legendary figure among custom knife makers and an expert in the design and craftsmanship of duty-oriented blades. His Spiders Star mate (originally released in 1999) faithfully captured all the key features of his highly sought-after custom models and is still a go-to choice of many savvy tactical knife users. By popular demand, the Star mate is back and better than ever. The new version features a satin-finished VG-10 blade with Terzuola' s iconic deep hollow grind and sedge. Its handle features textured black G-10 scales and skeletonized full stainless steel liners that form the foundation of its Walker Liner Lock mechanism. A four-position hourglass clip configured for ambidextrous tip-up or tip-down carry ensures immediate accessibility.Spyderco Starmate G-10 Plain Edge Knife, Black Review
I bought this piece because my previous favorite knife was my original Spyderco Starmate. This one has both good and bad in comparison to the original. The good: the lock is considerably more substantial than the original. The lock getting loose was why I retired the Starmate in the first place, and this one doesn't have that problem. Additionally, it feels exactly the same, other than being slightly heavier. Its a fine representation of the design, and I've been using it as my EDC since I got it.There are only a couple of "minuses", such as they are, that I would change if I ran the world. First, I'd use CPM440V as the blade steel again. VG10 performs admirably, but the edge in my original wears like nothing else I've ever used. I would have liked a hollow grind; I've never been much of a fan of the saber grind, but its not enough to stop me from using this knife daily. I also would have chamfered the edges of the G10 scales. I don't wear this knife with pockets that are less than roomy, as the corner of the scales are left rather square, and as such are all kinds of abrasive when trying to fit a hand into the pocket past them. I took a green Scotch Brite pad and burnished that corner a bit to lessen the issue, but it's still there. On those days I carry an Endura 4 instead. The G10 is thinner due to the full liner, where the original was nested. There wasn't enough material to work with to radius that corner, but again its not a deal breaker. Build quality is typical Spyderco: this thing just plain works.
