My 15 year old Thoroughbred gelding is an absolute pig in his stall. He rubs his butt on the water buckets, which causes freshly filled buckets to slosh out and soak his bedding. To add insult to injury; he LOVES to dunk his hay (kept in a hay net mind you) into the closest water bucket (he has two) until it is so gunked up that he will no longer drink from it, then moves on to the second bucket.

One of my biggest daily challenges is the fact that instead of cleaning his buckets daily and topping them off once a while I now have to dump them at least twice and fill them back up. With a bad back, this situation is less than ideal, especially with a husband that travels and I am the only hired hand for our two-horse barn. :-(

My trainer recommended automatic waterers to stop the hay dunking fiasco, but my husband did not want to spend hundreds on the higher end ones, so we first bought two of the cheap plastic/metal hybrid kind that you can find at a local tractor repair store (They are on here too, but I DO NOT recommend them). It took our gelding less than 24 hours to back into it and bend it down to the point where water was gushing all over the stall. (Mind you this thing was installed into a corner with 2x6 board backing.) We tried bending it back up, but the metal is so flimsy that holds it there was no point--we have re-purposed them for our goats.

The average price I found online for a solid all one-piece plastic waterer was over $250 after shipping was calculated (we live in Florida). Finally I decided to look on Amazon and was amazed at the savings! I was skeptical at first, but my husband took pity on me and said order one to see if it works and I am very happy to report that after a month of solid use that we have only had one leak (our fault for not tightening the 3/4" tubing we had to use to connect to our plastic water pipe). The horse is very happy with the fresh water and my back and wallet are ecstatic!

Will be ordering the second one right now and Prime is a wonderful bonus too. HIGHLY RECOMMEND for the luxury horse stall feel at a budget-friendly price. :)
