The hinge in the back has a plastic tray underneath it to catch the majority of the rain, channeling it to the same holes used to mount the mailbox to the wall. Keep this tray clean or else the little bits of dust and dirt will accumulate to 2 dark trails underneath the mailbox after many rainy seasons. The sides of the plastic tray has some play, so rain will trickle between it and the inside mailbox wall, creating a puddle at the bottom. I work at home, and even on light sprinkly days, I have to check my mail frequently or else be greeted with soggy mail if I wait too long. Mondays after a rainy Sunday are particularly bad if I forget to wipe down the inside. I'm planning on filling the gap between plastic tray and the metal wall with some silicone to see if that will resolve the issue.
