Panasonic FV-05VFL4 Ventilation Fan/Light Combination Review

Bought this to replace a busted and old Broan ceiling fan that was too loud, too cruddy, and too useless. I've had Panasonics before, and been very happy. This one is no exception.

Pros:
- Very clear installation instructions, including for multiple types of setup (mount to a joist, mount between, and so on). Included all the parts to install, including screws to attach it to the joist. That's enough right there. Even the wiring was simple and easy.
- The grating is large and easy to install/remove. I appreciated this at the end of a bit hairy installation (due to my situation, not due to the part).
- Very very quiet fan. It's hard to tell if it's even on. I was a bit disappointed that the only fan/light combo I could find that would fit in my limited headspace was only 50 cfm, but it does a better job than the roaringly loud Broan we had before - in a 10 x 8 x 10 bathroom. The mirrors aren't foggy after a shower and it doesn't feel like a sauna.
- It exudes quality. Yes, it's more expensive than those builder grade models, but after going to this, you'll never switch back. Every part of it looks and feels much higher quality than the competition.
- The main blower part is removable for installation. Makes installing the housing a cinch since it doesn't weigh anything, and 4 screws put it in place.

Cons:
- The wire box is a bit small. After adding the wires to hook it up and wire nuts to cap them off, there wasn't enough room. I had to trim down the included wiring, including stripping it, to make it all fit. No big deal, but they certainly could have made it bigger.
- The lights are very, very bright. Two 13W bulbs add a lot of light.
- The nightlight requires an additional hookup or wiring. If newly installed, this wouldn't be an issue, as you could run the wires. If you're doing it as a remodel, you won't have it.

If you're remodeling with this - unless you have access from above, you CANNOT install it per the directions. It's big, sturdy, and solid - so I simply put a few screws through the metal housing directly into the joist, then installed it further into the joist from the underside. I also used one of the pieces it comes with - which was no problem to reach into. You can't follow their instructions to "do it right" unless you can get to it from above. Just a heads up.
