I've been using electrobraid to fence a barnyard, and several paddocks for over 10 years. I have to keep some of our horses separated and keep the neighbor's cows out. For convenience, I have 8 different metal farm gates ranging in size from 6 feet to 16 feet. I have a 4 rope fence. So that I don't have to unhook 4 different handles for each of the gates, I run two insulated copper connecting wires through a rubber hose that's buried 6 inches below the gate opening, coming up the opposite gate post, re-connecting to the ropes on the other side - as shown in electrobraid installation info. This is a lot more convenient than hooking and unhooking handles. Because our climate has changed over the past 20 years to a more arid type, I installed a ground rod in the middle of every long run of fence, in addition to the company recommended grounding system. In all the time I've had the fence, we've only had a horse go through it once, and there was no injury. The horse was found grazing quietly on the lawn. The rope was a bit stretched and some of the insulators were broken off the posts - this was with the old nailing system. Which reminds me - the 1" screws now supplied with insulators are less effective than the old nail and washer system was. I attache my insulators to 5" posts, and deer jumping through can easily pop the insulators loose. I go down to the hardware store and buy 1 1/2" long washer head screws by the 100. These are much more effective than the 1" length. The above price ($201 per 1,000 ft. roll, free shipping) is pretty good. Last year I bought another roll from a different source for about $204, which seemed good too. After 10 or 12 years, the copper wires in the rope show some oxidation, which makes electric testing trickier, but trust me - it still conducts when you press bare flesh against it! I know, I've been nailed a few times recently when I got careless. The polyethylene rope seems to be standing up to heat, cold, and UV radiation quite well. It doesn't like fire, as we found out a few years ago when a passing motorist sparked a wind-driven blaze that melted parts of it. Replacement was simple, though, just a few splices of new rope with copper split bolt connectors, and it was good to go. We also have a llama who patrols the fence line and he's never gotten in trouble with it. Deer come and go quite easily, unless they panic and try to run through the H braces near gates and fence corners. If you have horses, electrobraid is the way to go. I know from experience that the up-front cost is far cheaper than dealing with a lifetime of wire cuts.
