Like all the made in China lights the metal is very thin. The glass used in this light is also very thin. The good in this light is not that it is first quality because it is so obviously not. American made products were much better in basic quality when we used to make things here. That said what makes this light the better buy if not the best buy is that the quality is better than most of the Made In China offerings. This light has socket covers that do not look as if they were made with rice paper coated in cheap clay. The metal while not thick and robust is of a basic quality superior to most other junk. The welds holding the metal bits together are second rate assembly line work that was rushed with little concern for quality. The light frame is not bowed or bent as is often the case with Made In China junk quality lights. The lights are large but hold only two bulbs three bulbs would have been better. The real indicator of a quality lamp is the size of the conductors. 14 gauge wire is the gold standard in residential home lighting products. Painfully thin conductors designed to carry rated wattages is a sign of cheap construction where corners are cut. You want a light with nice thick 14 gauge wire or the thicker the better in wiring. The wiring in this light runs thicker than I have seen in other Made In China lights. This light is very smart in its clean no frills retro design. the deep brown bronze color is great for a home seeking a craftsman style, mission style motif. Two 60 watt bulbs do not offer much light even if they are CLF'd (Compact Fluorescents.) If you are buying this light for a high traffic area or a kitchen you might want to buy and install two or three to insure you have enough light in areas that need bright light. These lights look their best with a soft warm light. The harsh cool or white light of business lighting schemes looks out of place in this fixture in my opinion. A note to the wise make sure you have enough head height clearance if you have 6 foot 8 inch chaps knocking about your house. All in all this is not the best light on Amazon.com quality wise but it is the best light in quality at this price point.

If you read enough of my reviews you'd think I am China bashing and I am not. I am simply telling the truth about China merchandise quality today. I grew up in the 1960's when Japan produced transistor radios that were world class junk. Post World War 2 Japan in my early youth once had a reputation for producing electronic and other consumer goods junk. Japan was not always the consumer good power house it is today. Japan hated its world wide reputation for creating junk merchandise and they worked hard over the years to improve their quality to the point Japan's quality care is envied the world over. China must learn the same lesson Japan did. In time China's reputation for creating junk merchandise will eventually hurt sales when this happens quality must and will improve to stay competitive. Chinese made lamps will improve because; to remain in business they must do so. When China's quality improves I will be able to write better reviews.
